We have evaluated the impact of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and dispersion on a 20 Gbit/s vestigial-sideband RZ (VSB-RZ) optical signal in comparison with a conventional DSB-RZ signal for the first time. The VSB-RZ signal has similar tolerance for 1/sup st/ order PMD and much better tolerance for dispersion.
