The electric ship distribution lines supply various capacitive and inductive loads that must be switched in and out of the electrical power system. These loads result in the cables being exposed to overvoltages caused by switching operation The goal is to determine the reliability of high voltage cables when they are over-stressed by a multitude of switching impulses. The presented study involves the aging of high voltage EPR and XLPE cables by applied switching impulses. Partial discharge and ac breakdown voltage were chosen as the parameters to evaluate the status of the cable.
