In this paper we demonstrate the fabrication and bread-board level testing of a coherent receiver (Coh-Rx) optical sub-assembly at data rates up to 100 Gb/s. The Coh-Rx core is an edge-coupled, electronic-photonic integrated circuit (ePIC), which hosts photonic integrated elements, opto-electronics and BiCMOS circuits in a silicon area of ~6mm2. Coherent detection up to 108 Gb/s with QPSK modulation format on a single wavelength and polarization is experimentally demonstrated. The Coh-Rx circuit exhibits a power consumption of 520 mW, which corresponds to an energy efficiency of 5.2 pJ/bit.
