The conventional consequent-pole flux reversal (CPFR) permanent magnet (PM) machine has poor torque performance. In order to increase the torque performance, an analytical subdomain model is proposed and developed for a CPFR machine with three-piece Halbach magnets over the tooth-tips. Based on the presented model, the general solution expressions of the vector magnetic potential equations for all the subdomains can be obtained. According to the interface and boundary conditions, the specific coefficients can be determined and the open-circuit and armature-reaction fields can be derived. The predictions show the electromagnetic performance of the proposed model with optimized Halbach magnets has a significant advantage over the counterpart of the conventional one. Finally, the finite element (FE) derived and prototype experiment results verify the analytical predictions.
