A novel VOlumetric Image Reconstruction algorithm, named VOIR, for cone-beam tomography is presented and an evaluation of its image processing performance is reported. The algorithm is based on Grangeat's (1991) formula relating cone-beam projections to the derivative of the Radon transform and the projection slice theorem. VOIR is a O(N/sup 3/ log N) reconstruction algorithm which has great computational advantages over Grangeat's and Feldkamp's algorithms for large values of the side dimension of the image, N. Its image processing performance is characterized by an analysis of the edge response from simulated and experimental data and compared to that of Grangeat's and Feldkamp's algorithms.<>
