As of today, the aerospace industry has performed work to develop standards for ensuring the authenticity of field loadable software (FLS) and additional work is ongoing to deploy this technology more widely. However, limited effort has been expended to consider the confidentiality of FLS protection. While this prioritization is reasonable in that authentic software is a key safety attribute, this in no way diminishes the need for confidentiality protection to provide a layered defense and to protect intellectual property. This paper will focus on three primary aspects of FLS confidentiality protection: existing aerospace standards and use cases, adjacent technology solutions from other industries, and potential aerospace solutions and challenges. Existing aerospace data loading standards are examined to understand the constraints and opportunities available for providing confidentiality protection. When considering aerospace use cases, care is taken to consider new product introduction and existing product support, e-Enabled systems and disconnected systems, and the wide diversity of suppliers, maintainers, and operators. Adjacent solutions from other industries are considered such as automotive standards (e.g., Uptane), Internet-of-Things (IoT) standards (e.g., Software Updates for Internet of Things (SUIT)), and physical media protection protocols (e.g., Advanced Access Content System (AACS)).
