This paper discusses the observation of a room temperature continuous wave oscillation from a surface-emitting photonic crystal laser based on the two-dimensional distributed feedback effect, that is, the band-edge effect in a photonic crystal. The laser can operate in single longitudinal and lateral modes over a large area.
