Terrain Awareness and Warning Systems (TAWS) are common standard avionics equipment for civil aviation aircraft to prevent controlled flight into terrain. Airbus has developed the A400M new military transport aircraft, which includes fly by wire technology for flight control and envelope protection. The numerous additional military flight phases — which are not part of civil flight operations — are the main driver for this new development. Additionally new cockpit indications needed to be considered to support the flight crew in their military operation. This paper introduces the Tactical Ground Collision Avoidance System (T-GCAS®), whose function is to prevent controlled flight into terrain in military flight phases of the A400M.
