CAV (Connected Autonomous Vehicles) is the future of self-driving and a key milestone towards intelligent transportation system. Vehicle to Everything (V2X) communication enables connections between vehicles and with their surrounding infrastructure, which improves (autonomous) driving safety via information exchange and collaboration. Given the complexity of the communication infrastructure required by V2X and the potential impacts of safety, it is critical to carry out joint studies between the communication and self-driving communities. One of the major gaps is the lack of a good level of open abstraction layer and associated platform for efficient engagements and continued improvements between the two technology domains. In this paper we present an abstraction layer and a common platform infrastructure to facilitate joint studies to overcome some limitations of current approaches. More importantly, we hope the proposed design and platform will enable an open eco-system for all key players to work together and continue to develop new technologies and application scenarios.
