This paper summarizes some of the important deployment capabilities of PONs that are facilitated by optical loopbacks in the passive outside plant. The optical loopbacks route upstream traffic back to all ONUs where this information is used in conjunction with additional optical and electronic components in the customer premises, to control upstream transmission, facilitate customer intercommunication links and protection switching of distribution fiber links.
