We have demonstrated a novel technique for improving the beam quality of a diode laser bar by incoherently beam combining individual emitters in an external cavity. Nearly a factor of 50 improvement in beam quality is observed. Such a source may be useful in applications requiring high brightness from inexpensive sources.
