The analysis reported has shown the interplay of the main effects impacting on the transmission performance of high-speed WDM systems. It has been seen in which cases the cross-phase modulation (XPM) effect has some relevance on the performance. It has also been shown that there is a counterbalancing among four-wave mixing (FWM) and XPM: when the dispersion is high and the number of channels is high, XPM is the main source of performance limitations, while when the dispersion is low, FWM poses severe limitations.
