Payloads of most common communication satellites consist of repeater units, antennas and interconnecting elements. These interconnecting elements also called transmission lines are coaxial cables and waveguides. From RF performance of view, insertion loss per meter of waveguide is a contributor to most of the system budgets, which makes the design of the waveguide runs critical. Although the design of waveguides are commonly known as an RF expertise, because of the need to survive under severe static/dynamic and thermal conditions, mechanical design and verification of waveguide runs and supporting structures require a specific mechanical engineering approach. Analysis of the waveguide run is performed first thermally and then structurally with the help of thermal analysis output. Thermal analysis is concluded with obtaining waveguide surface temperature which is approximately 90°C. In addition to analysis of quasi-static loads, using the temperature output thermoelastic analysis is run and compared with material allowable values. The resultant stresses and natural frequencies show that the design of the sample waveguide run withstands to the loads which the waveguide assembly will be subjected to during its entire life. In this study, basic mechanical design principles of waveguides will be explained and analysis results to confirm the design will be presented.
