In this paper, the variation of thermal diffusivity of Mg-Sc alloys at room temperature with increase in scandium content is investigated using photoacoustic (PA) technique. An open PA cell in the heat transmission configuration is employed for the measurement. A suitable modification of Rosencwaig-Gersho theory for the PA effect is made for the calculation of the thermal diffusivity due to thermoelastic bending of the alloy samples. The experimentally observed variation in thermal diffusivity is attributed to the reduction in the electronic contribution to thermal conductivity is due to impurity scattering.
