By building a three-degree-of-freedom ship motion mathematical model of the hull, the propeller, the rudder and the side thruster, based on the MMG (Mathematical Model Group) separated modeling theory, the maneuvering efficiency of the side thruster in different operating conditions is analyzed in this paper, while considering the hydrodynamic interaction between the hull, the propeller, the rudder, the thruster and the combined action of wind, wave and flow. In the MATLAB/Simulink environment, the simulation model of each system is established and integrated into the overall mathematical model of ship motion, and the effectiveness of the ship motion model is verified by simulation. The findings are that the thrusting device has a good operation effect and can effectively improve the ship's maneuverability when the ship is steaming at a low speed. By comparing the ship test data with the simulation results, the error can meet the engineering application standards. Finally, a simulator of marine side thruster is developed, using the SUPERSIMS simulation platform and the Visual C++ Visual programming, which can simulate the operation and control functions of the marine thruster, as well as the functions of fault setting and analysis for the thruster. So far, the simulator has been put into use in visual teaching and scientific research for ship maneuvering.
