Summary form only given. Strained layer Al/sub x/Ga/sub y/In/sub 1-x-y/As MQW structures used in the manufacture of highly reliable lasers at 1.3 /spl mu/m and 1.5 /spl mu/m are reviewed. These lasers are capable of operating over a wide temperature range for uncooled digital applications and at high speed for analog and microwave applications.
