With growing installations of renewable energy generators, the requirement for grid support services is increasing due to the variable nature of these generators. While new strategies for improving grid reliability are being proposed and recommended for future installations, the existing generators are relatively overlooked. To this end, this research paper proposes a modified wind farm operation framework for improving the active power support capability of legacy DFIG-based wind farms during voltage-dip events while maintaining the maximum specified reactive power capability by utilizing the grid-side converter margin, which is conventionally unutilized in these events. The present work achieves this improvement by assigning lookup references to individual wind generators through an offline optimization strategy. Thus, these lookup tables require updates only when the wind farm configuration is changed. The optimization is performed in a multi-generator wind farm considering the Wake Effect. The simulation results on the benchmark model demonstrate the improvement in overall support capability, which is pronounced during high wind speeds. This feature is helpful, especially when the voltage-dip-induced frequency drops are closer to the under-frequency cut-off thresholds.
