We described a differential receiver and a digital-ring oscillator that are designed for burst-mode optical interconnects for packet communications. We demonstrated packet reception at a data rate of 10 Gbit/s with an experimental optical packet receiver featuring differential signal detection. The sensitivity was -34.4 dBm and the tolerance for input power fluctuation was 13 dB. A 1-chip clock recovery circuit and its module have been developed for a clock-speed of STM64. These superior characteristics are useful for receiving fluctuating packets in photonic-packet switching networks.
