Summary form only given. Here we demonstrate a simple optical receiver that overcomes the bit rate limits due to post-detection amplification with the use of a high current p-i-n photodiode and an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) to yield over 1.9 volts peak-to-peak (p-p) output directly form the photodetector, in contrast to a 150-mV output previously reported.
