In order to investigate the situations that raise Chinese bus drivers’ driving anger, and check the potential relationship between driving anger, burnout and altruistic personality, a sample of 228 bus drivers was obtained in Guangdong province, China. The respondents were required to complete questionnaires including measures of driving anger, burnout and altruism. A 20-item driving anger scale for bus drivers, consisting of five anger provoking situations including self-interested behaviors, slow driving, traffic obstructions, illegal driving and discourtesy, was achieved through principal components analysis, validity and reliability test. In addition, the resultant data were analyzed by conducting t-test and correlation analysis. The result indicated that the average score of self-interested behaviors was the highest among the five anger provoking situations, and bus drivers punished for breaking traffic laws or those who been involved in at least one accident in the past 2 years significantly scored higher in slow driving. It also showed that burnout was positively correlated with driving anger, however, the correlation between one dimension of burnout, i.e. reduced personal accomplishment, and driving anger was weak. Meanwhile, altruism was negatively correlated with both driving anger and burnout. These findings can be applied in interventions for driving anger and safety education for bus drivers so as to improve the safety of public transport.
