A side detection system (SDS) based on radar technology for automotive applications is introduced. The function of such a system is described at length and the resulting safety enhancement benefits are summarized. The particular performance feature of detected object classification into "hazardous" and "nonhazardous" categories, and the implications to the driver of this feature, are discussed. One specific classification criteria as implemented in the Delco SDS product is analyzed in detail.
