This paper presents the Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer (JUICE) mission focusing on the Radar for Icy Moon Exploration (RIME), which is one of the instruments included in the JUICE payload. RIME is a radar sounder aimed to study the subsurface of Jupiter’s icy moons Ganymede, Europa and Callisto. This paper briefly presents the main characteristics of the JUICE mission and the scientific objectives of RIME. Then it addresses the instrument implementation, identifying the major technical challenges and the relevant solutions. The instrument architecture, operation and physical characteristics are described.
