Upcoming 40 Gbit/s systems have an increased performance demand for flexible optical interfaces. This paper summarizes the performance limitations and deduces necessary interface characteristics for "plug and play" functionality. We discuss major limitations in 40 Gbit/s transmission systems and evolve performance characteristics for flexible optical 40 Gbit/s line interfaces with a broad application range.
