To improve the ramp control performance and to enhance the system response speed, a compound control method of cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control is employed to study the highway ramp metering problem. Firstly, a cell transmission model (CTM) is established to describe the dynamic property of highway traffic flow accurately. Then, the principle and algorithm of CMAC-PID compound control are formulated. Also, CMAC-PID ramp controllers are designed based on the CTM and a nonlinear feedback control technique. This control problem is an output density tracking problem. Finally, the superiority of this approach is verified by simulation examples. Compared to a fuzzy logic control, CMAC-PID compound control has greatly shortened the response time and improved the dynamic performance. This approach can effectively eliminate traffic jams and maintain the stability of highway traffic flow.
