In summary, we have demonstrated filter-free, polarization insensitive, wavelength conversion using a T-gate semiconductor laser. Wavelength conversion of a 250 Mb/s NRZ optical signal has been achieved with a 2.1 dB power penalty at 10/sup -9/ BER and a detector sensitivity of -29 dBm. Future work in our laboratory will be conducted at 1.55 /spl mu/m to ensure compatibility of the T-gate device with present high-speed optical communication system.
