Spectral narrowing and pulse self-compression of high-intensity femtosecond pulses are experimentally studied in normally dispersive media. Shorter than Gaussian or sech/sup 2/ transform-limited self-compression femtosecond pulses are obtained. Spectral red-shift is observed in the experiment.
