Nowadays drones diffusion represents a nonnegligible risk and drone detection systems become a necessity to avoid this danger. In this paper the design of a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar is presented. The sensor is based on the Infineon BGT24MTR11 integrated circuit. Transmitting and receiving serial arrays of patch antennas have been suitably designed. For the transmission a single antenna has been used, while a group of four receiving antennas has been employed thus realising a Multiple Input Single Output (MISO) system. Both the transmitting and the receiving antennas have been shaped to reduce the side lobes level. An amplifying circuit, with a shaped gain, has been used to enhance and filter the received signal. Two set of measurements have been performed, the first with a Single Input Single Output (SISO) system to estimate the distance between the target and the radar, the second with a MISO system to estimate the obstacle position (range and angle). In the first case a metallic reflecting panel and a water-filled plastic tank have been positioned at different range from the antenna in front of the radar, while in the second case a metallic panel was placed at various positions along the cross range orientation. In both cases measurements results evidenced a good agreement between the measured distance and the real ones with both targets and methods.
