We study a simple proposal to improve the response time of emergency vehicles using VANETs. Emergency vehicles broadcast messages to alert of their presence to drivers of private cars and traffic lights. We assume that private cars immediately allow emergency vehicles to surpass them and traffic lights change their state accordingly. We analyze the convenience of such a system by means of simulations that take into account varying traffic intensity, communication range, message frequency, and driver ability.
