Summary form only given. Higher-order dispersion compensation is essential for high-speed optical fiber transmission systems operating at over 100 Gbit/s. Third-order dispersion (TOD) compensators operating around zero second-order dispersion have been proposed using planar lightwave circuits. However, these devices were only narrow band. In this paper, we show that it is possible to construct a broadband TOD compensator by using a combination of two nonlinearly chirped fiber Bragg gratings. We designed phase-mask patterns and fabricated gratings from these patterns. The group delay characteristics are presented.
