As the need for gigabit data rates between high performance workstations become increasingly important, large area vertical cavity surface emitting lasers provide capability for a low cost multigigabit optical source for short distance (<500 m) multimode data links. In this talk we present results on the design, growth and characteristics of large area VCSELs at both 980 nm and 850 nm. The large area VCSELs operate in several multi-transverse modes resulting in a wide spectral linewidth of around 4-7 /spl Aring/. This wide linewidth allows for >7 dB of mode selective loss (MSL) tolerance at a BER of 10/sup -10/ @ 622 Mbps.
