The advanced train control system (ATCS) is a closed-loop, distributed control and communication system using advanced computers and digital data communication. ATCS is the application of modern command, control and communications technology to a line constrained transportation system. To date, 19 form, fit, and function specifications have been written for the ATCS. The current effort is to clarify and restructure the operating system logic, called the control flows, for the train monitor and control functions. The principal concept and design of the ATCS are presented. ATCS safety, testing, and implementation are discussed.<>
