Semiconductors may be used for frequency shifters in WDM networks as well as other components of optical communications systems. Nonlinear optical semiconductors have been used for passive, compact, low cost devices to modelock and Q-switch lasers. Finally, semiconductor optical nonlinearities can been used to study charge carrier transport.
