The increasing demand for efficient highway systems has highlighted the need for advanced toll collection methods that can handle high vehicle volumes while minimizing delays. Traditional tolling systems often lead to congestion due to manual processes or semi-automated mechanisms that require vehicles to slow down or stop for toll payments. This project proposes a seamless, automated toll collection system that leverages Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Internet of Things (IoT) technology to streamline the tolling process, reduce congestion, and improve user convenience. The system utilizes an The Espressif Systems Processor 32 (ESP32) microcontroller and an MFRC522 RFID reader placed beneath the road surface to detect RFID tags mounted on vehicles as they pass over the tolling area. This allows for the automatic deduction of toll charges from users' preloaded accounts without requiring vehicle stops. The use of RFID technology ensures efficient, high-speed toll processing while reducing human intervention and minimizing error rates. To enhance user experience, the ESP32 also hosts a local Wi-Fi network, enabling users to access a web-based interface where they can view their balance, review transactions, and recharge their accounts from mobile devices or laptops. This toll collection system has been designed to offer a scalable solution adaptable to various highway infrastructures. By eliminating physical toll booths and integrating automated account management, it improves the overall flow of traffic, supports high-speed transit, and reduces operational costs associated with manual toll collection. Furthermore, the system's IoT-based features contribute to smart transportation infrastructure, aligning with modern developments in intelligent transportation systems (ITS). This paper presents the system's design, implementation, and potential for scalability, demonstrating how RFID and IoT integration can transform traditional tolling methods into a fully automated, user-friendly solution for modern highways.
