A stable narrow-linewidth and high-efficiency Er/sup 3+/-doped fiber ring laser was demonstrated with an external fiber grating. With this configuration, the nonreciprocal oscillation can be achieved without an optical isolator. The built laser has the advantages of compactness and low cost.
