Summary form only given. The advent of Er/sup 3+/-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) and subsequent improvement in their characteristics have made them key contributors to the growth of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission systems in the 1.5-/spl mu/m band. Some Terabit/s WDM transmission experiments have been reported, which used the full bandwidth of conventional EDFAs.
