The evolution of sensor-based avionics systems from autonomous to federated to integrated systems has been underway for more than a generation. The need for a more tightly coupled approach to sensor-based avionics was recognized in the mid-60's resulting in a series of research, development, and technology transition programs that have revolutionized sensor-based avionics architectures. Even so, aircraft with their genesis in the 70's, such as the F-16 and the F- 15, still utilize a suite of dated, federated sensor avionics. Continuing procurement of federated systems for the remainder of the life cycle of these aircraft is not viable as the technological demands of today's airborne battlefield clearly outpaces the capabilities of federated systems. Thus, a retrofit of a modern integrated sensor avionics suite is a near term imperative. The current generation of integrated sensor avionics represents a major step in avionics integration through the application of common digital processing modules. Today, as the development of this first generation of integrated avionics is continuing, rapid technological advance continues. This advance promises an even greater level of integration, resource sharing, and cost-effectiveness.
