Summary form only given. The recent explosion in Internet traffic implies the dawn of the multimedia age. Not only has the traffic volume of data communication increased, but also requirements for new service attributes are becoming more tangible. One important attribute that any future broadband multimedia network must possess is flexibility. It can be realized by the logical realization of transport functions. The key technology to enable this has been developed-ATM.
