In electromagnetic welding process, electromagnetic forming technology can be used to form sheet metal into shape. The physics of electromagnetic forming process are quite the same as for electromagnetic welding, until the point the contact of the two sheets, after which they are either formed against each other or joined, creating a solid state joint. The contact modeling is presented to obtain normal contact area and contact load to ensure the bonding strength accurately. The electromagnetic force can not only accelerate the sheets but also clean the surfaces of the sheets. In this paper, critical velocity, yield criterion and surface state are indexes to estimate bonding quality of electromagnetic welding. ABAQUS and ANSYS are investigated to describe the electromagnetic welding process, and then the simulation results are checked by the experimental results.
