The International Maritime Organization introduced new technical requirements and regulations targeting ships' efficiency and carbon emissions. These new environmental requirements for existing ships came into force from 1 January 2023. This paper considers different possibilities for reduction of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from ships. Various technical retrofits and upgrades, as well as alternative clean fuels are presented, which can provide great savings, reduction of operating costs and improvement of energy efficiency of the existing ships.
