The Hyperconnected ATM (HCATM) concept proposes to enhance the connectivity between the aircraft's safety critical avionics systems and ground by using the non-safety air ground radio links like cabin satellite communications or commercial 4G/5G. This paper summarizes the key technical principles underpinning this concept., proposes a candidate aviation network architecture and outlines the key challenges and possible approaches for their resolution. To substantiate these theoretical considerations., the paper also briefly presents the preliminary results for the early proof-of-concept experiment developed and demonstrated under the Iris program funded by the European Space Agency.
