This paper proposes an universal time-domain windowed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (UTW-OFDM) as a novel physical layer signal format for the next generation communications systems such as the 5th generation mobile communication (5G) systems. Most of the conventional wireless communication systems such as the 4th generation mobile communication (4G) systems and WLAN are based on OFDM that has advantage in terms of spectrum efficiency in a band. However, OFDM has also drawbacks such as high out-of-band spectrum emission. Novel physical layer signal formats should be developed to overcome such drawbacks of OFDM for the 5G systems and so on. The proposed UTW-OFDM has high backward compatibility with conventional OFDM based systems such as Long term evolution (LTE) downlink and the out-of-band power emission can be reduced by over 44 dB compared to the conventional OFDM.
