This paper analyzes the characteristics of the inter-turn short circuit fault based on the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) structure algorithm. The finite element model of the PMSM inter-turn short circuit fault is established for the electric vehicle application. Simulations are performed on healthy motor and faulty motor with different severity of short circuit faults and operate modes. Then analyzes the influences of short circuit fault on the magnetic field and various parameters of motors and extracts feature vector for detecting inter-turn short circuit fault. It also proves that the method of finite element analysis (FEA) can provide a scientific and accurate basis for studying on inter-turn short circuit fault. This research method makes a foundation for diagnosis of other faults of PMSM for electric vehicle.
