Many aerospace users of radiation hardened (RH) components have radiation performance requirements that are relatively minor compared to traditional RH requirements. By relaxing these requirements, users may be able to obtain a significant increase in performance in a standard (but more stringent) high-reliability ASIC flow. In this paper we present an approach for evaluating an arbitrary commercial technology library and establishing guidelines to follow when designing an ASIC with limited, but important, radiation requirements targeting common aerospace applications. The approach is presented with Global Foundries 22 nm fully-depleted silicon-on-insulator (22FDX) as the primary example.
