This study aims to find the optimal vertiport design based on the geometry of the candidate site in terms of maximizing the capacity and net profit of the vertiport operator. This study presents a vertiport design problem (VDP) of a novel mathematical formulation of integer programming. It involves the positioning of vertiport facilities including the final approach and takeoff areas, gates, taxiways, and passenger terminals within a candidate site while ensuring safety requirements for urban air mobility operations. Results of the proposed vertiport design problem can support the decision-making of vertiport operators by providing an optimal design and layout of vertiport facilities. A numerical experiment for the Samseong vertiport in Seoul, Korea is presented, and the impacts of two objective functions on the vertiport design are analyzed.
