In today's world, rise in road traffic, traffic jams and accident rates are a result of the world's ever growing population. Despite the inclusion of various invehicle safety features, such as Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), air bags, rear view cameras, seat belts and electronic stability control, there are many road accidents occurring especially on Indian roads. The objective of this work rises from the need to efficiently organize and guide road traffic such that there are substantially less occurrences of traffic jams and accidents. In this work, an intelligent transportation system has been proposed, aimed at providing a solution that can enable signals to monitor vehicles and vehicles to monitor other vehicles in the vicinity of avoiding fatalities and reducing time delays at busy junctions by providing the driver with the relevant information. This is achieved by enhancing On-Board Unit (OBU) and the Road-Side Unit (RSU) of Hybrid Vehicular Ad-hoc network (VANET) system. The signaling between these OBU and RSU is done with the Dynamic MANET on Demand (DYMO) protocol. The proposed work is simulated using OMNET++ simulator VS. It is observed from the results that the proposed scheme provides better performance.
