Coherent optical feedback into a continuously operating AlGaAs laser diode (LD) causes optical power fluctuation as well as a spectrum shift. Even extremely weak levels of external feedback were shown to influence LD spectral properties. We analyzed the dependence on external cavity length of the output wavelength, modal structure and optical noise of a high-power LD (HPLD) used in an extremely short external cavity configuration, that is realized via butt-coupling into an optical fiber.
