The United States Army is modernizing its heavy tactical truck fleet. Because of the changes in world powers during the past decade, any new system developed by this country must be adaptable to a variety of uses, be reliable and maintainable, and conserve manpower as well as other resources. The Palletized Load System, one of the latest additions to the fleet, is designed to perform a variety of jobs from hauling ammunition, food, or other supplies to serving as a weapons carrier. A self-load/unload vehicle, the truck is operated by a crew of one. The Tank-Automotive Command of the US Army used a two-phased, non-developmental acquisition strategy and a business approach to establish repair levels supported by thorough logistics support analysis to field this new heavy tactical truck in less than 48 months.<>
