Longitudinal optical feedback and lateral optical confinement are realized simultaneously by incorporating dry-etched deep gratings in an AlGaInAs-InP laterally coupled distributed feedback laser. Stable single-mode operation with a side-mode-suppression-ratio over 45 dB has been demonstrated.
