The marine transport sector (Ferries, Ships, Cruises) contributes significantly to the air pollution because they are primarily powered by Diesel engines which are known to be highly expensive and produce a lot of harmful emissions. The objective of this study is to design an ecofriendly hybrid renewable power system integrated with a desalination unit to meet the main and auxiliary electric loads of the ferry boat. The goal is to make marine transport sustainable and more environmentally friendly. Modeling, simulation, optimization are used in this study for the design of hybrid solar PV/fuel cell power system for the ferry boat. The results show that the hybrid Fuel Cell/Solar PV/Diesel Generator power system is the best system architecture to meet the ferry boat: high renewable fraction (20% of electricity generation from Fuel cell and Solar PV), and low greenhouse gas emissions (15% emissions reduction compared to ferry boat powered with diesel engines). The system has no power shortage and produces no excess power.
