Electronic steering wheel system is an essential part of steer by wire system on vehicle, whose function is to provide aligning torque to the driver in absence of steering column. If the driver could not feel the aligning torque, he may make a wrong operation. So the safety reliability is a key point for electronic steering wheel system. This paper proposed an electro-mechanical design of electronic dual-redundancy steering wheel system. It has two similar sets of sensor modules, controller modules and actuator modules. With appropriate redundancy management mechanisms, the system can achieve high safety performance. At the end of this paper, a safety reliability analysis based on reliability block diagram will also be put forward to evaluate its reliability.
